Women in Ag Local Business Tour: Friday, September 5th

Morning Tour of Oak Ridge Farms, Pilot Visit and tour the awesome and diverse Franklin County farm, Oak Ridge Farm, near Pilot. Owner David Duong started Oak Ridge Farms in 2013 and today raises and markets natural meats, cut flowers, and has opened a newly built Farm Stay along with a pavilion! Look for his Blue Ribbon dahlias at the upcoming State Fair. We are scheduled for a morning tour. Lunch in Zebulon Afternoon Visit and Tour: State Farmers Market off Lake Wheeler Road Visit the growers there especially our own Franklin County producers from Mae Farm (Jones Family). We will plan to leave from the Franklin County Ag Center at 9:15 a.m. from the parking lot. A county van will be available for those that wish to ride. Piedmont Forest Landowners’ Summit: Tuesday, October 7th

On October 7th from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center in Pittsboro, NC, will be a gathering of regional forest landowners in the Piedmont region to learn the latest on the following topics.

  • Timber Harvesting Options for Landowners
  • Realities of and Strategies for the Timber Markets of the Piedmont
  • Intro. to Agroforestry and Forest Farming
  • Forest Invasive Plants: Identification and Management Options
  • Triangle Prescribed Burn Association and Benefits of Prescribed Fire
  • The Good, The Bad, and The Bugly: When to Worry about Tree Pests
  • Improving Wildlife Habitat on your Forestland
  • Enhancing your Forest for Eastern Forest Birds
  • Panel of Experts and Landowners and Exhibitors

Cost for the summit is $35 and includes a light breakfast and catered lunch. The deadline to register is October 2nd. Pre-registration is required.

I will plan on driving the Franklin County van and we will be leaving from the Ag Center’s parking lot in Louisburg at 6:15 a.m., and plan on returning after 6:30 p.m. If you have questions regarding either of these educational events, call the Franklin County Cooperative Extension Center, 919-496-3344 or email Martha Mobley I hope you can participate on both dates.
