The North Carolina 4-H Horse Program offers several ways for youth, ages 5 – 19, to participate. NC 4-H EDUCATIONAL “HORSE-LESS” CONTEST OPPORTUNITIES
Horsebowl
Horsbowl is a quiz contest made of questions about horses. Two, four-person teams compete head to head answering questions read by a moderator. Participants use a buzzer system to “buzz” in to answer the questions. Questions are asked on a wide variety of topics, including grooming, feeding, anatomy, and breeds.

Hippology
Hippology means “study of the horse.” In this contest, participants can compete as an individual or be a part of a team. The contest consists of four main components: exam/slide IDS, stations, judging, and team problem.
Participants are tested on their knowledge and identification of items such as horse tack, colors, breeds, feeds, and anatomy. There is a rookie division for first-time competitors.

Horse Judging
Horse Judging Contests are made up of 6-10 halter and performance classes. All classes have four horses each. Contestants receive scores based on how closely they placed each class when compared to how a set of official contest judges placed the class. Contestants also prepare and present oral reasons to a judge where they explain how and why they placed some of the classes. There is a rookie division for first-time competitors.

Horse Communications
Horse Communications contests include both Public Speaking and Presentations. Presentations can either be performed by an individual or a two-member team. Presentations involve the use of props and visual aids to explain or describe a topic pertaining to horses. Public Speaking is a talk on any topic related to the horse industry.

Horse Artistic Expression & Creative Writing
Horse Artistic Expression contests include Painting, Drawing, Photography, Poster, Craft, Sewing, and Digitally Created Art. Creative Writing categories include Poetry, Short Stories, and Essays. Creative writing entries must be related to horses or the horse industry, and a new topic must have been developed since the previous year’s contest. Any horse-related topic is acceptable.
