Winter Field Crop Update

The 2019 Regional Tobacco Production Meeting and GAP Recertification Training will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude with lunch. The location is the Granville Expo Center, 4185 U.S. 15 Oxford, NC. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m.

The meeting is designed to provide you with GAP recertification training as well as production information for the 2019 growing season.

Please note the following important information:

  • Space is limited! Registration is required, and early registration is recommended.
  • To register, call the Franklin County Extension Center at (919) 496-3344 or go online.
  • Registration deadline is 5 p.m., January 11, or when maximum capacity has been reached.
  • Bring your GAP card to the training to be certain you receive credit.
  • Bring your Pesticide License if you would like to receive pesticide credits (if you have misplaced your card, you may be requested to show a photo ID). 2 hours of pesticide credit will be provided in categories (NODX).
  • You may wish to bring your GAP notebook, as we will be providing updated references and record keeping forms.
  • We encourage only those who have contracts or plan to have contracts to attend this meeting.
  • If you are unable to attend, note that there are several other training sessions planned across the state. Visit the NC State University Tobacco Growers portal to find a training session that you can attend.

Following the Tobacco GAP Meeting, we will be offering the fumigant recertification training for you to receive credit for your fumigant license. We will start this one-hour training at 1:30 p.m. or immediately after lunch. If you plan to attend this training please let staff know when you call to register for the Tobacco GAP Meeting.

Note: If you plan to use these new herbicides you must attend a training session approved by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Pesticide Division each year. New this year the applicator must be a licensed applicator.

ANNUAL RESPIRATOR FIT TEST OFFERED FOR PESTICIDE APPLICATORS

You will have the opportunity to be fit tested at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Franklin County Center in Louisburg on January 23, 2019. Call the office by January 18th at 919-496-3344 to set up a 30-minute appointment to complete the test. Appointments will start at 9 a.m. The cost for the test will be $25.00 (please bring a check made payable to the NC Agromedicine Institute). You can also complete the online medical questionnaire before attending. There is a $35.00 cost for the online questionnaire. Please bring a printout to show you have completed the online portion. You can find the test at Respirator Assessor or the Online Respirator Medical Evaluation. If you do not come medically-cleared, then there will be an additional cost of $10 for the medical clearance. Check with local physicians’ offices, urgent care facilities, and occupational health clinics to determine whether or not they can provide medical clearance services if you would like.

Helpful Hints for Respirator Fit Testing Class and/or Fit Testing Appointment:

  1. If you have a respirator from previous fit testing please bring the respirator and the cartridges the day of the testing.
  2. You must do the medical clearance prior to attending the class if you prefer you can use your personal physician and have him/her write: “Name is medically cleared and able to wear a respirator. This clearance is good for        year or years.”
