Shiitake Mushroom Workshop

A shiitake mushroom workshop will be held on Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Franklin County Farmers Market Shelter located in the Shannon Village Shopping Center in Louisburg NC. The workshop will start at 1:00 PM and end at approximately 4:00 PM.

Participants should bring 2 to 4 freshly cut oak or sweet gum logs.  The logs should be cut from live trees.  Dimensions of the logs should be approximately 4-8 inches in diameter and approximately 4 feet long. All participants will leave one prepped and inoculated log for research, and they can take the remainder of the logs home.

Farmers who are already participating in the mushroom program can place an order for spawn with their county agent or technician. Spawn will be ready in mid February. New farmers can get spawn only if they attend a shiitake mushroom workshop in 2014 and inoculate a minimum of two hundred (200) logs and also agree to the terms of the program.

To register for the workshop and for more information, you should contact the Franklin County Cooperative Extension office at 919.496.3344 or visit us at 103 South Bickett Boulevard in Louisburg.
